Short abstract with content covered during RTD:

Do you imagine to find a rich nematode diversity in a small bag with dry sand of the Atacama desert? This RTD provides insight in the work of the CRC project B08 that aims to assess the biodiversity of nematodes in the extreme and hyperarid regions of the Atacama. Participants will get hands-on experience in the extraction and identification of nematodes from desert samples – don’t miss the opportunity to watch living desert animals...

Through the analysis of some example data, participants will moreover learn about the difficulties to taxonomically identify species based on classical morphological approaches (yes, nematodes have morphological differences) or the approach of genetic barcoding. From this it will become clear why the project B08 aims for a biodiversity assessment that relies on whole-genome sequencing data.

Previous experience: No.

What you need to participate in the course: Nothing special.

Maximum number of participants: 12 (first come, first served).
PhD candidates of the CRC have priority to participate. Left spaces can be filled up by interested Postdocs of the CRC (write an email beforehand, if interested).
