Short abstract with content covered during RTD:
Stable isotopes are widely used in Earth system sciences. A broad overview about the most important mechanisms and applications will be given in a morning lecture. Special emphasis will be given to mass balance models, which will be explored in more detail over the rest of the day. The afternoon lecture will specifically cover how isotope enabled mass balance models of animals can be used to constrain physiological and (paleo-)environmental parameters (from biominerals). The course also includes a practical part consisting of a lab-tour as well as the extraction of water from biological tissues and stable oxygen and hydrogen isotope analyses.
