On March 23, 2026, Dr. Dietmar Quandt (University of Bonn), Dr. Julia Bechteler (Senckenberg & University of Jena) and Dr. Eduardo Campos (Universidad Católica del Norte Antofagasta, UCN) had the pleasure to meet and talk to the UCN vice rector of investigation and technological development Dr. Alfonso Urzúa, the UCN vice rector of Strategic Development and quality Dr. Jorge Alfaro Pérez and the dean of the UCN faculty of engineering and geological sciences Dr. Carolina Rojas Córdova. The meeting was set up to discuss and initiate the handover of the climate stations from the CRC to the UCN.
A further meeting was set up with the CEAZA in La Serena on march 25, 2026, and Dr. Dietmar Quandt had the pleasure to discuss with Dr. Carlos Olavarria (director CEAZA), Dr. Boris Dewitte and Dr. Alexandra Stoll (both researchers) as well as Cristian Orego (coordinator CeazaMet) the potential technical support by the CEAZA in maintaining the climate stations and hosting the data in their server facilities.
The CRC looks very much forward in further/future productive meetings with the UCN and the CEAZA to prepare the handover of the climate stations and in supporting the development of a dense climate station network for research in the Atacama Desert.
Both meetings aimed at developing a future MOU between the CRC1211/UzK and UCN/CEAZA that will ensure maintenance of the stations and incorporation of the climate data in CeazaMet after the CRC1211 funding phase.
