Short abstract with content covered during RTD:

Atmospheric data are essential to understand the role of atmospheric processes for ecosystem and landscape development and to quantify environmental conditions, such as moisture supply. In particular, reanalyses provide the state of the atmosphere in high spatial and temporal resolution on convenient grids without missing data for recent decades. In this course, you will learn the concept behind these data sets and how they can aid your research. This will include a hands on exercise in which you will select variables of your interest (e.g. humidity, temperature, wind, cloud cover, evaporation, precipitation, etc.) and proceed with downloading, extracting and visualizing them for your desired region. Additionally, other meteorological data sets available for the Atacama Desert, such as simulated precipitation and observations  from the CRC1211 weather stations, will be introduced.

Previous experience:
Basic programming/scripting (Python, R, Matlab) knowledge would be benefitial but is not essential. We will provide scripts to guide you through the exercises.

What you need to participate in the course:
We will work with Jupiter Notebooks in our CIP-Pool. However, feel free to bring your own laptop if you prefer. Data and scripts will be available for download.

Maximum number of participants: 20 (first come, first served).
PhD candidates of the CRC have priority to participate. Left spaces can be filled up by interested Postdocs of the CRC (write an email beforehand, if interested).
