Overall aim of the IRTG is educating a generation of truly interdisciplinary doctoral candidates in the fields of Earth and Life Sciences.
Further aims are:
- Enhance scientific discourse and communication between IRTG members and with other CRC members to support interdisciplinary approaches within the CRC
- Offer PhD students project-related training
- Support bottom-up initiatives and grant applications
Organisation
The IRTG aims to support the doctoral candidates of the CRC 1211 (figure 1) in their development toward scientific independence, and prepare them for positions in academia, higher administration, consulting and public relations.

For this purpose, the IRTG offers a qualification programme consisting of a scientific training programme, an internal grants programme to foster international co-operation and networking, and support activities initiated by the doctoral candidates themselves. Furthermore, the IRTG builds on local graduate schools and/or graduate academies (figure 2), which offer non-project-related transferable skills training, and shall complement the project-related and topic-specific training of the IRTG with a variety of offers.

Together, they aim at educating a generation of truly interdisciplinary doctoral candidates in the fields of Earth and Life Sciences, a combination of growing importance in the course of ongoing and accelerated global change.
