(University of Bremen, Institute of Environmental Physics)
Date:   13.12.2021, plus self-study phase prior to this date
Time:   1-5 PM (CET), breaks included
Location:   via Zoom

Description:

In the recent years, Python has become a predominant tool for data exploration, analysis and visualization. By combining simple, intuitive syntax and great extension capabilities to the core language, Python is recognized as a powerful tool across various scientific communities.

In this introductory workshop, the focus will be on an efficient scientific workflow with Python. The course will be divided into two parts.

For the first part, a series of pre-recorded talks will be provided, together with a set of exercises to work on your own (self-study phase, ca. half a day). These will cover the basics of the language and some easy programming examples.

The second part will be an interactive online workshop via Zoom, where we will discuss the exercises and develop together small programs to cover the following topics:

  - Data structures, Input & Output

  - Tools for data exploration and analysis

  - Publication-ready visualizations

  - Reproducible workflow (raw-data -> analysis -> publication -> archive)

Previous experience: None required.

Prior to the workshop:
It is required to have a working Python distribution installed to effectively participate in the workshop. Python and additional packages are open source and freely available. Details will be provided to the participants before the workshop.
