Official ceremony and execution of the Memorandum of Understanding

On Friday the 16.09.2017 the Universidad Catolica del Norte (UCN) represented by the rector of the UCN Jorge Tabilo Álvarez and the CRC1211, represented by Prof. Tibor Dunai ceremonial signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the UCN and CRC1211. Both parties are looking forward for a prolonged scientific collaboration and a fruitful exchange between Chilean and German scientists.

Second field campaign of D3

In September 2017 we carried out our second field trip to the Atacama Desert to investigate the local hydrological situation at the Salar de Llamara and the Salar de Huasco.

Investigations at the Salar de Llamara started in the preliminary phase of the CRC 1211. Isotope analyses of pond waters from 2014 show that the isotopic evolution of the ponds can be reproduced by evaporation models, but further parameters such as the isotopic composition of atmospheric vapor and the influence of wind, need to be characterized more precisely.

Second field campaign of Z2 and Z3 ...

... with focus on the installation of weather stations, the realization of irrigation experiments, and the installation of dust sampling devices. During the second field campaign in September-October 2017, PhD student Franko Arenas Díaz from Universidad Catolica del Norte (UCN – Antofagasta) accompanied Z2 and Z3. We were able to successfully set up and configure the first transect of weather stations, which consists of five weather stations stretching from the coast along the Rio Loa valley to the Andes.

Scientific Field Work with Universidad Catolica del Norte (UCN – Antofagasta) and University of Cologne

During the 10-15 of September, a small group of geologists from Chile and Germany, represented by Prof. Eduardo Campos, Prof. Rodrigo Riquelme, Sebastian Muñoz (all UCN) and Prof. Tibor Dunai and Benedikt Ritter (UoC) had a first collaborative field work around El Salvador. The main objective of this short fieldwork was to investigate the geological and geomorphological landscape evolution around El Salvador.
